Land Stewardship Planning creates plans that contain the Tahltan community’s direction on how to properly care for and steward every piece of land in Tahltan Territory. This is our land and the responsibility to care for it wisely rests with all Tahltans. It is our inherent stewardship responsibility as Tahltan people. Many of us have learned this responsibility from birth, but there are some who haven’t been afforded the opportunity to learn about our territory. Part of this project will teach those interested about our lands and help all of us to understand how we can fulfill our responsibility to look after it properly. We will have different views and opinions about how we should look after the land, but our strength lies in our collective grounding in how we care about our land.

Project Overview

There are two major deliverables in this component of the TSI, a Tahltan Land Stewardship Plan and a collaborative Tahltan-BC Land Use Plan. The Tahltan Land Stewardship Plan (TLSP) will build on previous planning work to create a Tahltan approved stewardship plan for Tahltan Territory by August 2022. This plan will describe how to take care of the land so that it remains healthy into the future and how to ensure that land can continue to support Tahltan uses and values on the land. The collaborative Tahltan-BC Land Use Plan will be built on the base established in the TLSP, then add in additional provincial uses and values that must be considered in our future Tahltan-BC government-to-government land decision making.

Project Background

There have been previous land use planning initiatives in Tahltan Territory, some lead by the Provincial government and some lead by the Tahltan. Each of these initiatives collected valuable information about the land and Tahltan’s interests on and use of the land. This work provides a solid foundation, that when supplemented with more comprehensive and contemporary Tahltan knowledge, will yield plans that are grounded in Tahltan land interests and Tahltan knowledge around how to properly care for the land.

The Province of British Columbia has recently adopted major changes that offer the Tahltan a very unique opportunity for the Tahltan to lead the way in the Province. These include the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA), a commitment to modernize land use planning, the Province’s commitment to make ecosystem health a priority, and to implement all of this in partnership with the Province’s Indigenous community. The TSLP will show in detail how to achieve many the goals of these major shifts and will help to lead the way to change the way land use planning is done in the Province of British Columbia.
