This multi-phase project has the overarching goal to create an organized and accessible documentary legacy and resource for the Tahltan Nation. The project will focus on developing a physical archive and a corresponding digital collections management system based on international archival standards to ensure secure storage of documentary resources and to facilitate access and sharing of those resources in our custody with TCG staff, community members, and potentially other collaborators.

Project Overview
The TCG Archives Project will build capacity in the Nation by training successful candidates in information management and other knowledge and skills. Through collaborations with other TCG Departments such as Membership and Lands, the Archives Project will link to other information management databases and systems, empowering database users and managers by providing access to original sources of data, by filling or help identifying information / knowledge gaps, and by eliminating duplication in research.
Phase one of the TCG Archives Project will result in a physical repository of organized and safely stored records and materials created and accumulated by the TCG. The final phase of this project will open access to TCG’s records and materials holdings, which will support TCG administration, operations and facilitate knowledge sharing and reaffirming culture and identity across the Tahltan Nation.
Project Background
The TCG Archives Project will ultimately result in a permanent TCG Archives office; a key site of information stewardship and governance at the TCG. The TCG Archives Project will create certainty of TCG’s legal, physical, and intellectual control over the records and materials in its holdings and of incoming records and materials from internal and external sources. Through traditional archival processes, the project will bring into view the legal, fiscal, administrative, historical, and evidentiary value of its records and materials.
The development of a physical and digital archives, and its policies and procedures, will open access to a significant holding of records and materials, spanning from the 1800s to the present day, that have been ‘lost’ to TCG leadership, its staff and Tahltan membership. Lack of continuous and adequate funding, changes in Tahltan government’s programming, leadership and mandates, and natural disasters have been the most significant barriers to realizing a project of this scale and scope. Through TSI funding, capacity and project management, there is an incredible opportunity to achieve the creation of a TCG Archives.

Ursula Abramczyk
Archivist
Hello! I am pleased to introduce myself to the Tahltan Nation as a recent addition to the TCG’s Culture & Heritage Department. My name is Ursula Abramczyk. I am a settler and Indigenous ally originally based in Eastern Canada and with roots in Eastern Europe. Since 2013, I have worked for BC First Nations in support of culture, heritage and land use and occupancy projects related to First Nations’ self-determination and territorial autonomy. I currently hold the position of archivist as part of the TCG’s archives project.
In this role, I am helping to bring together the documentary legacy of the Tahltan Nation in order to make it more accessible to a number of audiences that will be directed by our access policy, which is currently being developed.
This project will result in an indispensable resource for the Tahltan Nation, such as for TCG staff asserting Tahltan rights & title, and in the promotion of Tahltan culture, language, and history.
